The Reston Runners has designed over 150 running and walking courses in and around Reston for the Club's and community use. There are three types of courses: running, trail running and walking.
The running courses are generally on hard surfaces: Reston blacktop paths, sidewalks and roads. They are designed to handle large groups and most are measured accurately.
The trail running courses are generally in woodlands and fields. Expect occasional stream crossings and few or no water stations; you're advised to carry your own nourishment. Typically, trail runs are an out-and-back type.
The walking courses use sidewalks, Reston blacktop, and natural paths and trails but do not use streets. A few have been measured accurately to +/- 0.1 mile but most are approximate distances.
All of the courses have a written description; most have a corresponding map. To view a course description or map, simply click (once) on the appropriate link on the Courses Index page.
Maps currently exist for those courses shown on the Courses Index page with a "Map" hyperlink to the right of the course description hyperlink. We are posting new maps as fast as our map-meister can create them (one or two a week is the current pace).
The "Starting Location" link will open a new page with a map of the Reston area. A marker on the map will depict the general location of the course starting point. If you click on the marker, a detailed local map will be rendered. These two maps should guide you to the starting location. A list of all the current starting locations is also shown on the main locations page.
Many of the running courses have been very accurately measured; typical accuracy is +/- 0.1 miles. The measured distance for these courses is shown in a special box in the upper right-hand corner of their description.
You can change the listing for your personal preferences. Select any combination of "Course Type" and "Status," and click "Submit." If you check the box on the right, the program will remember your selection for return visits as long as your browser's "cookies" are enabled.
The course Status notation indicates the following. Sched: Actively used for scheduled weekend runs and walks. Other: Usable courses for individuals and small groups, may be used in the future and on rare occasions for weekend runs and walks. Obs: Courses that will never again be used by the Club and are deemed not useful for individuals or small groups. Obsolete courses are purged from the list occasionally.
Maps are displayed in a new, second window. You can view and print the map from this window. Close the map window to return to the Courses page or the Course Description, depending on where you were when you linked to the map.
