10. Spending 24 hours away from home in beautiful downtown Hagerstown and surrounding environs at the classy Clarion Hotel (hey, doesn't a "hotel" have to be more than two stories high?)
9. Hitting the Ruritan "All You Can Eat" breakfast "feed" three times during the first three hours of the race, and letting your runners know how enjoyable it was.
8. Threatening to ditch your runners and go outlet shopping for shoes at the mall in Hagerstown if they are not appropriately appreciative of your efforts.
7. Getting to paw through two near-strangers' personal belongings and trying to decide what they might need at various times along the course.
6. Having a large assortment of snacks, treats, drinks, etc. from which to choose from above-referenced runners' bags ("They won't need these! They won't even remember bringing it! What are they going to do about it anyway?").
5. Getting to boss around two grown men ("Get up! What are you doing lying on the ground"! I said get moving! You've walked the last mile, now let's see you run!").
4. Knowing that at mile 46 you look much better than everyone running through, even people who looked a lot better than you at the start of the race.
3. Dodging gunshots from the first day of hunting season while waiting for your runners on tahe C&O Canal.
2. Having a great friend like Julie Behrooz to crew with. (Tie for first)
1. Serving as crew for two great guys, Tim Smith and Jim Ratzenberger, who gave everything they had, taught me a lot about guts and finishing what you start, and who ran a great first-time JFK in under ten hours and with a daylight finish! 1. NOT HAVING TO RUN IT MYSELF!
