This is what I wish I had said...
Loretta Malander: 23 November 2002

This morning at breakfast, Anna had some really nice praise for my accomplishments at the JFK 50 (past and present).  Since two of my weaknesses are accepting compliments and making "off the cuff" speeches, I was at a loss for words.  I also had to run out quickly to get to church on time.  So, to set the record straight, this is what I wish I had said:

I don't deserve any special accolades.  I just went out and did what all the other competitors did, maybe just a little faster than some.  I want to give special thanks to Anna Bradford, who in 1997 convinced me to do this crazy thing for the first time.  Anna deserves credit for making the JFK such a positive experience for everyone who participates.  I also want to thank my crew, DeeDee Loughran and Steve Lord for all their help along the way.  Of course, many thanks go to all the support crew (I won't even begin to try to name all the many names in fear that I might leave someone out!).  Finally, I'm humbled by the attention given to my time, but I can tell you that my 10:18 in 1997 was just as satisfying.  I also felt more fatigued and had more aches and pains in 1997 because I was on my feet for a longer period.  I think some of the greatest accolades should go to those who truly persevered through morning and/or evening darkness.  Congratulations to everyone!  We're all champions!  Many thanks!
