GENERAL INFORMATION
Reston Runners is a club of 800+ members who share an interest in running, walking, and fitness. We welcome all runners and walkers. We serve the needs of recreational and competitive runners. The club has excellent participation at club runs, so there will be people running at a wide range of paces. Our activities safely promote health, fitness, and achievement of one's personal goals in an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie.
Reston Runners is governed by a eight-member board of directors: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, director of walking programs, and three members-at-large. We rely heavily on the significant participation of club volunteers to lead and sustain our ongoing programs and events.
Reston Runners is a member of the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Our members receive RRCA membership benefits, including the RRCA event insurance. Members also receive a quarterly newsletter published by the Reston Runners, available in print or on-line.
TRAINING RUNS The club schedules regular training runs two days every week: Saturday at 8:00AM, and Sunday at 7:00AM (summer only) or 8:00AM (remainder of the year). Saturday runs are 5 miles, and Sunday runs are 10 miles and beyond. Beginning in the late spring, Sunday runs have an increased mileage option for those training for the Marine Corps Marathon, or other fall events. All courses have water stops. In the spring, a longer distance option is offered to those training for spring marathons.
INTERVAL TRAINING Reston Runners also sponsors an interval training program for members beginning in June and continuing into September. The program promotes overall fitness, speed and flexibility through programmed stretching and running at varying intensity levels.
WALKING Reston Runners has a growing contingent of fitness walkers who enjoy two scheduled walks every week. Beginning at the same starting points as our scheduled runs, walkers enjoy a 3-mile walk on Saturdays and a 3- or 6-mile walk option on Sundays.
JFK 50 TRAINING Reston runners provides training and support for those preparing for the JFK 50-Mile Ultramarathon in November. Informational meetings, trail runs and an organized team sign up involves approximately 50 runners and 50 support team members each year.
CHILDREN'S RUNNING Reston Runners conducts a developmental running program for children (Youth in Motion) beginning in June and continuing through August each year. The program provides running and exercise readiness activities in an atmosphere of non-competitive fun.
WOMEN'S RUNNING In May and June, Reston Runners holds an eight-session program for women who want to begin a new exercise program or get back into exercising. Following a program that respects individual needs and fitness levels, participants are guided in activities that promote flexibility, strength, and conditioning. Participants learn and practice sensible exercise techniques that they continue between training sessions. The program promotes fitness in a non-competitive atmosphere of mutual support and encouragement.
RACES Our principal race events of the year include the Fall Into Winter 10k Run held in December, and the Women's Distance Festival 5k held in June. Special club events include the Thanksgiving Day 5ishK Cross Country Run in Lake Fairfax Park, the Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Memorial Day runs from Reston Town Center, and an Adventure Run on Labor Day.
Reston Runners also offers Finish Line Services for local races, including the staff to manage the finish line, all equipment needed and the delivery of results in a timely manner.
SUPPORT Reston Runners participates in a variety of community events each year, including sponsoring a section of the W&OD trail, participation in the Relay for Life and the March of Dimes Walk-a-thon, and training children at the YMCA.
Because of insurance considerations, bicycles, skateboards, baby joggers, roller skates, in-line skates, animals, and radio headsets are not allowed in any of our sponsored races or during our regular walk/run events, except in special instances announced in advance (e.g., or twice-annual "bring-your-dog" events, which use a separate course for those with dogs).
For schedule and event information, check our on-line schedule or call the Reston Runners HOTLINE at 703/437-FOOT (3668). For membership information, go to our application page where on-line and mail-in application options are available.
