JFK50 Aid Station Instructions
JFK50 Aid Station Instructions
| Programs - JFK50 Ultramarathon |
Support teams are set up at 3 separate aid stations to help each of the 57 Reston Runners running by. You are the cheering section, packhorse, navigator of bad roads, and provider of all information for the runner with "ultra brain." You and your team will be helping all 57 runners at your aid station, so you will be busy.
This year’s Crew Captains are Helen Hipps and Ann Deschamps. They will be checking in with the volunteers at all aid stations throughout the day. Team Captains in charge of each aid station are Kevin & Debbie (Weverton), Jess & Kathryn (Antietam), TJ & family (Taylors).
What to pack
Chairs, blankets, towels, food for yourself,* paper towels, camera, directions/maps/info, extra warm clothes, TP.
Team Captains: Card table, first aid kit, trash bags, chairs, posters with encouraging words, RR banner or sign.
* There is no place to buy food near the race course and it is difficult to find a good place open in morning. One exception is from 6am-11am at the Community Hall at the Brownsville Bretheren Church, Roherersville Rd. (Rt. 67-between Gapland and Weverton) there is a $5.00 all you can eat pancake breakfast.
Tasks
Team Captains
- Pick up drop bags at the start and transport to your designated station.
- Familiarize yourself with the official aid station.
- Set up near the trail- the runners will not go anywhere more than a couple feet out of the way. Avoid setting up right at the official aid station - this is too crowded.
- Arrange runner bags for quick access. Create a “used bag” area.
- Position a volunteer by the trail to direct Reston Runners to our aid station. Consider sending an envoy “upstream” to alert runners to the upcoming support station.
- Inform Helen Hipps or Ann Deschamps of any Reston Runners dropping out.
- Transport bags to the finish and place under Reston Runner banner.
Timers
Track runners’ splits.
Everyone Else
- Locate the runner’s drop bag and refill water bottles, offer food, find supplies in bags.
- Don't expect the runner to be able to do anything or think clearly. Their hands might be too cold to open Ziploc bags or peel a banana.
- Tell runners when the next a) official aid station is b) Reston Runner aid station is. Runners fixate on this information. Also tell them who they are about to catch.
- Consider dressing in your running clothes and pacing a runner for a mile or two into or out of your station. Do this 3 times and you’ve run 10 miles.
