What is the Relay for Life? Relay for Life is a unique, challenging, and fun way to raise money for the American Cancer Society and get a good workout at the same time. It is a 20-hour overnight celebration at South Lakes High School track. Teams of 8-15 people take turn walking or running around the track from 12 Noon on Saturday, May 31st,  until 8am on Sunday, June 1st. Each team has at least one member on the track at all times. While the Relay is taking place, there is a party atmosphere created by people camping out, enjoying entertainment, eating, and playing games. The event is not a competition, but still it can be a good workout.

How is Reston Runners involved? Reston Runners has participated in the last 8 years and has raised several thousand dollars per year for the American Cancer Society. Members of past Relay teams have enjoyed the physical benefits of the event as well as its festive atmosphere and the camaraderie of participating in a team event. The club will provide a tent that will be set up on the field of the South Lakes track. Come join us for a few hours of exercise, friendship and fun.

Remembering Many of you might know that Duane Baltz, a long time and beloved Reston Runner, died lin December, 2006 of Cancer. I ran with Duane many times and enjoyed his conversation and his running articles. His death is a clear proof that no one, no matter his/her level of health or fitness, is immune to cancer. We will be remembering Duane at the Relay. We will light a luminaria in his memory during the evening luminaria ceremony.

How can I participate? Sign up for the team and participate in the Relay. You can run, jog, or walk for as long as you want--anything between one and a 20 hours--whatever suits you.

Registration The easiest way to register is on-line by visiting the Reston Runners' Team Secure Web site  . Click on "Join our Team" and choose the second option (Participant Registration - Cash or Check) because the registration has already been paid.

Fundraising In the weeks leading up to the Relay, try to raise $100 for the American Cancer Society; just ask 10 friends for $10, it's really not that difficult. If you don't want to raise money you can still participate; just make a donation.
