Reston Runners Invited to Participate in the
Potomac Valley Track Club All-Comers Track Meet
Saturday, August 5,   2006

Team Coordinator: Gary Grilliot.  He can be reached at trackmeet@restonrunners.org .

Warning! Warning! There's a vicious rumor floating around some running circles that the all-comers meet on Aug 5th is in Bethesda, MD.  Bethesda? We don't race in no stinkin' Bethesda! Go to  Potomac Valley Track Club  and click on the All-comers track meet link and get all the pertinent info.  But pay particular attention to where it says-

WHERE: Langley High School, 6520 Georgetown Pike, McLean VA 22101

See all you fast fun cats on the 5th

A Day at the Track

Last Sunday, after the group run, I put forth an idea to Jim Ashworth and he promptly tasked me with writing a little blurb to promote the idea.  The idea is for a club outing to a Potomac Valley Track Club All-comers Track Meet.  At first I was tentative to suggest going to a track meet, because after all we're a road running club, right?  We run 10k's, 5k's marathons (lots of marathons), I mean its right there in our name- the Reston Roa"..whoa, wait a minute.  We're not the Reston Road Runners, we're the Reston Runners!  Hey, my idea might not be so far-fetched after all.

Bi-weekly the PVTC puts on track meets and welcomes runners of all levels to compete.  The races vary from 100 meters up to 3000 meters, including a 1mile and 3000m race-walk.  For any rogue throwers or jumpers in our club there are field events.  For $8 you can run as many races as you want. The level of competition is a varying as the events.  There are national level runners who occasionally show up; last year I saw Sarah Bowman and Darrell General at meets.  In more than equal representation are the recreational club runners.  Events are broken into heats by time.  Racers estimate to the clerk what time they feel they may run and the clerk divvies up the runners into heats.  Last year one of the races I remember most is watching Steve Forman chase down a young whipper-snapper in the final 100yards of a mile only to have the youngster kick in the afterburners with 50 yards to go.  So there's no reason to worry about being not being competitive.

The date of the meet I had in mind is Saturday, August 5th.  What better time to show-off all the new speed you've gained from participating in the interval workouts with Coach Cindy?    This could also give you a incentive to keep track of times from different intervals and to see what events you may want to run.  Does Jim Bradford beat you in a mile but you can lay the smack down on him in a 400?  Put a challenge out there, settle it on the track.

Personally I've enjoyed track since high school and have run all-comers meets wherever I've resided.  I thought this might be an opportunity to share the enjoyment with other members of the Reston Runners. Besides myself I've seen club members Steve Forman, Jeff Fritz and Ron Bryan at these events.   If you have any questions, I'm sure any of us is willing to answer it to the best of our abilities.  If you'd like to check out some past results or just see how the meets are organized go to  Potomac Valley Track Club  .  I hope this can be a fun event for the club, see you on the roads or track!

The order of events is as follows:

9:30 am

3000m Racewalk
800m Youth Racewalk
300/400 Hurdles

10:10 am

Mile
100m
Mile Racewalk
400m
100/110 Hurdles
3000m
200m
800m
4x100m
4x400m

I see some potential bragging rights with those last two events!!

Some of our runners who consistantly take home hardware from local road-races (DeeDee) might want to take a look at this site  Masters Rankings  .  See if you have what it takes to qualify as All-American!!!
Last year Steve Forman and Jeff Fritz both qualified and Jeff has qualified again this year.  I truly think some of our runners (DeeDee) could really do well.

But again... It's all about the fun!!
