Zinnias - in Memory of Stephen Mecklenburg
John K Nusbaum
07-25-04

Anna brought zinnias to last Sundays gathering place; from her home on Blue Berry Hill
I remember these old fashion flowers from the summers of my childhood and, I guess that I always will
A large crowd on the parking lot, filled the air with chatter; as is our custom before starting hours
Our president whistled to gain our attention; her words brought a hush then, an understanding of the flowers
You see, one of us had fallen last week, Anna informed and, in knowing, we might make some sort of sense
Of a tragic and untimely death, while valiant efforts did commence
Then in her final words; before sending us on our way
Please take a flower and a moment across the street, if you wish, when you return today
Our runners and walkers accomplished their many miles, on trails around our town
Then one by one, the beautiful zinnias, were placed on the spot, which now was hallowed ground
