Fast Ten
John K Nusbaum
10-20-02

The day was cool, perhaps cold to some but, a PR was within my reach
I dressed in shorts and tee shirt; was I going to the beach?
No beach in my mind, just an honest try at the Army Ten Mile Race
I fared right well with Annapolis's hills, so a flat course could improve my pace
The Metro train from Vienna contained so many familiar faces
Reston Runners were out in force, like so many local races
The Howitzer report came booming back to announce that the race had begun
And from the rear came Phil rolling forward; he was the only one
Slowly we runners began to warm from the morning chill
I'd work to keep my spits below eight thirty a mile; this was going to test my will
I stayed with Jim and Dawn as long as I could, their liquid belts to try today
They could avoid the water stops but, I'd need a couple along my way
Miles came and went and , the splits stayed where I hoped they'd be
Two miles to go, I increased the pace a bit, to see what I could see
The finish in sight, I races it in, individuals to pass before I could rest
One hour twenty two and thirty seconds made this race a personal best
And a check of the Army's web site showed that there were many Reston Runners who'd passed this running test
