Maureen Lopina's Story

Boston Marathon, 19 April 2004

By far the hottest, and slowest (4:07 chip) marathon I have done (this was my 6th ever).

My favorite crowd support moment: I stopped to walk and the woman behind me accidentally stepped on my shoe. It came completely off, and I needed to sit down on the curb to untie the double-knotted laces and get the shoe back on my foot. Immediately, my calves seized up and tears started spilling down my face. My fingers weren't working properly and I couldn't untie the double knot. I was so frustrated! I threw my running shoe over the fence to three college girls and begged them to please untie it. One of them started to help, then her friend said, "NO, she can't help you; you'll get disqualified!" I pleaded "give it back, give it back," and they threw it back over the fence. Then they all talked me through the process of untying and retying, high-fived me, and cheered me onwards.
