Safety Reminder and Update on Status of Group Activities:  May 29, 2020

As we reach the end of May, we are encouraged that Northern Virginia is now in Phase 1 of COVID reopening.  We are no longer required to wear face masks while exercising outdoors, although it is still encouraged.  We are still prohibited from gathering in groups larger than 10 people, therefore our group activities remain on hold.  We will continue to monitor state, county, and Reston Association guidelines to see when we might be able to resume our group activities.  Until then, we encourage everyone to stay fit and to keep running and walking, which is easy to do by yourself.  If however you choose to run near another person for safety or other reasons, practice the recommended 6-foot social distancing.  And in this current situation, in consideration of those who share the paths and trails of Reston with you, please don’t spit on the paths.

To encourage safe exercise, we have temporarily turned off the Event Calendar, Please visit our Course Library for a full listing of Run & Walking courses

As noted above, Governor Northam’s latest Executive Order has relaxed some restrictions in Northern Virginia.  It continues to permit you to get out and exercise, provided you comply with the social distancing requirements.  It does not yet provide a basis for the Club to resume group activities.

Fairfax County has currently banned group but not individual use of trails and in the county.  As many of you know, the paths of Reston are under the jurisdiction of the Reston Association, not Fairfax County.

Even as restrictions may be relaxed going forward, please use common sense and consideration of others in practicing social distancing and wearing masks in public places where distancing is not practical.

Recap of Club Impact:

With sadness we note the passing of long time Reston Runner, Patrick Brown, Saturday, May 2nd. He leaves behind his loving partner Leslie, and son Justin. A private Funeral Mass was held on Friday, May 8 at 11:00 am. You may view the service or Pat’s obituary at https://adamsgreen.com/tribute/details/11354/Patrick-Brown/obituary.html#tribute-start

Congratulations to Holly Armstrong

On May 2, Reston Runner Holly Armstrong ran the entire 45-mile length of the Washington & Old Dominion trail to raise funds and awareness for the World Central Kitchen and their work in feeding those in need due to the coronavirus.  Holly was assisted, both in terms of both run support and contributions, by many of her fellow Reston Runners, and raised over $4,000.  Well done, Holly!

Connecting Through Social Media

During this period when we cannot connect with each other as we usually do, we encourage you to use social media to stay in touch.  In addition to using your personal social media accounts to post pictures or updates of your workouts and any spring blossoms or wildlife you encounter while out and about, this Reston Runners site tells you how to post your photos on the club's pages. https://www.restonrunners.com/index.php/2-uncategorised/442-social-media

Runners Marathon of Reston

Due to the closure of Fairfax County Public Schools to outside users, and now to students as well, we are unable to hold the RMR this year.  Please see the event website http://www.runnersmarathon.com/#intro-1  for more information.  If you registered for this event you should have received an email from our Race Director Anna Newcomb on March 17 explaining your options and what will happen next.

Looking for Another Race?

Many of us enjoy competing.  Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic is not leaving you many opportunities to race in the near term.  In the District of Columbia, the Rock and Roll Marathon and Half in March and the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in April have been canceled. Other notable cancellations include the NYC half marathon in March, the Shamrock marathon and half in Virginia Beach, and the Charlottesville 10 Miler.

Among the races that have been postponed to sometime this fall are the Boston and London Marathons, the Big Sur and Paris marathons, the Ukrop’s Monuments 10K in Richmond, the GW Parkway 10 Miler in Alexandria, and the Charlottesville marathon.
